An example of a Storyboard Job Description

INTRODUCTION:


Storyboard artists play a crucial role in visual storytelling across various media industries, including animation, film, television, and advertising. They are responsible for translating scripts or narratives into sequential visual representations, helping directors and producers visualize scenes before they are filmed or animated. Depending on the project, they may collaborate closely with directors, screenwriters, and animators to ensure continuity and clarity in storytelling.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Interpret scripts, screenplays, or briefs to create storyboard sequences that effectively communicate the visual narrative.
  • Work closely with directors, producers, and other team members to understand project goals, tone, and visual style.
  •  Create rough sketches and storyboards that outline key scenes, camera angles, and character actions.
  •  Incorporate feedback from stakeholders to refine and revise storyboards, ensuring they align with project requirements and vision.
  • Establish composition, pacing, and mood through visual storytelling techniques such as framing, shot choice, and transitions.
  •  Maintain consistency in character designs, props, and environments throughout the storyboard.
  •  Collaborate with animators and layout artists to ensure smooth transitions between storyboard panels and final animation or filming.
  •  Keep abreast of industry trends and techniques in visual storytelling and incorporate innovative approaches into storyboard designs.
  •  Manage time effectively to meet project deadlines and deliver high-quality storyboards on schedule.
  •  Communicate effectively with team members, providing clear explanations and visual references to support the storytelling process.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum 3 to 5 years of experience as a storyboard artist or a related role in visual storytelling.
  • Bachelor's degree in Animation, Film, Illustration, or a relevant field.
  • Proficiency in storyboarding software such as Toon Boom Storyboard Pro, Adobe Photoshop, or Sketchbook Pro.
  • Strong drawing and sketching skills, with the ability to convey emotion, action, and composition effectively.
  • Understanding of cinematography principles, including camera angles, shot composition, and visual storytelling techniques.
  • Knowledge of character anatomy, perspective, and environment design to create dynamic and believable storyboards.
  • Experience with digital art tools and techniques, including digital painting and color theory.
  •  Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to work efficiently under pressure and adapt to evolving project requirements.
  •  Portfolio showcasing a range of storyboard sequences and storytelling abilities.

NICE TO HAVES:

  • Proficiency in additional software tools such as Adobe After Effects, Premiere Pro, or Blender for animatics or motion graphics.
  •  Experience with 3D modeling or animation software, enhancing storyboard visuals with depth and dimension.
  •  Background in film studies or screenwriting, understanding narrative structure and pacing.
  •  Knowledge of industry-standard file formats and delivery specifications for storyboards.
  •  Familiarity with storyboarding techniques for different media formats, including film, television, and advertising.
